This mission to Mun will serve not only to place a lander on another stellar body for the first time in kerbal history, but the lander itself is a test, as it will hopefully next carry a rover onto the surface of Mun for advanced exploration. Currently the lander is carrying only science equipment, and extra ballast wieght has been added to simulate the mass it will have when it carries the rover. After months of deliberation the team has chosen to land within one of the large craters, in this case the Northwestern one. This will put the lander within easy hopping distance of several other areas of interest should the decision be made to move from the initial landing site.
Ascent was nominal and the craft has attained LKO, where it will remain while mission controllers plot out our burn that will take us into towards Mun later today. Systems checks are currently underway in the meantime.
